Astrology Baseball Melts Ice: Virgo Season
I’ve decided that Virgo Season is the proper time in the Major League Baseball season for me to start scoreboard watching. That is, it’s the earliest point where I’m willing to step back and look at how each individual win or loss affects a team’s place in the standings. For example, it’s OK that the Mariners obliterated my beloved A’s last night, because the Astros lost, which means the good guys get one step closer to winning the AL West.
Of course, it’s never too early to start scoreboard watching when it comes to the fate of our society. And as of this Virgo season, it looks like Authoritarianism has taken a late (stage capitalism) lead over Democracy. Nowhere is this more apparent than Los Angeles, which for the past 80 days, has been besieged by the frankly fucking fascistic ICE and Border Patrol, specifically engineered to spread terror throughout the community. Like the vast majority of us here, this humble blogger has been horrified/outraged/inspired to action by everything that’s been going on, but for some reason, I wasn’t moved to write publicly about the situation until now.
So here’s what I should have been boosting here on the site, going back to the first attacks on the LA community back in early summer. First, when LAPD continued their unconstitutional trampling of our first amendment rights during the protests, we had some great coverage by The Nation, The New Republic, and Meditations in an Emergency, which accurately captured the conditions on the ground.
There are also neighborhood groups fighting back, such as People’s City Council, and peoople giving advice on what to do next, such as Banned in Your State.
For people who want to get involved, organizations like CHIRLA and Ground Game LA have been doing incredible work.
I know this is extremely behind the 8-ball in terms of when this stuff is actually happening. But there is a saying about things being late vs. never that sort of applies here. Think of this as catching up after a long time stuck in the Freeze response. And it’s not like this stuff is not appropriate now, since the potential resistance in Chicago will need to look to LA (and of course DC) as an example of what they’re in store for.
It's also poignant that Virgo season in LA has seen one of the hottest heat waves of the year. But you know what they say about the LA heat: it MELTS ICE.
